The purpose of mentoplasty is to increase, or decrease, the projection of chin to achieve a more harmonious profile.
The chin plastic surgery is minimally invasive for both surgical technique and postoperative course.
The mentoplasty can be combined with rhinoplasty in a single action, taking the name of profiloplasty, to create harmony between all facial features.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUES
CHIN AUGMETATION
When the chin is slightly pronounced and / or outlined, it needs an implant insertion, selected on the characteristics of patient’s face and on the severity degree of the problem.
The mentoplasty lasts from 40 to 90 minutes, is performed under local anesthesia with sedation and day-surgery formula.
CHIN REDUCTION
Excessive protrusion of the chin is removed by making an incision in the lower part of the gum, within the buccal vestibule, followed by detachment of the membrane that covers the bone and filing of the excess bony portion. Sometimes it may be necessary to remove a portion of the masseter muscle if it is hypertonic. Sometimes the soft tissues of the chin are those that determine its prominence, in this case, with an external incision hidden in the submental crease, the flaw can be corrected, removing the bone and a lozenge of skin and subcutaneous tissue.
RECOVERY
For its low invasiveness, the patient may be discharged a few hours after mentoplasty, with a dressing and an elastic band compression to hold 24/7 for the first 10-15 days, and thereafter only at night for about 3 weeks. The return to social life is allowed after 7 days, while for sports patients must wait 4 weeks.
